Manchester United have officially confirmed that 17-year-old Nigerian striker Chido Obi will not be available for selection in their UEFA Europa League fixture against Real Sociedad due to eligibility restrictions.
Obi, who has shown promise in the club’s youth system, recently joined first-team training but is unable to participate in European competitions this season.
His ineligibility stems from UEFA’s squad registration policies, which mandate that clubs submit an 'A list' of eligible players before the knockout stages of continental tournaments.
Although teams can register up to three new players, they must meet specific UEFA criteria, and Obi was not included in the updated squad list.
Additionally, UEFA’s 'B list' allows clubs to register young players trained at the club for at least two continuous years, but Obi, having only arrived from Arsenal in October 2024, does not yet qualify.
While Obi remains unavailable, Manchester United have confirmed that Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven are eligible for selection. Dorgu, despite serving a domestic suspension, is permitted to play in European competitions, while Heaven could also be called upon in defense.
With attacking options limited due to injuries and squad rotations, Obi might have provided additional depth, but manager Ruben Amorim will now have to look at alternative solutions as United prepare for their crucial first-leg clash against Real Sociedad.
