Mamelodi Sundowns face grueling 37-day fixture rush after AFL victory

Posted : 13 November 2023
After clinching the African Football League title, Mamelodi Sundowns face a jam-packed schedule in the remaining days of the year, with a rigorous lineup of 10 games scheduled within just 37 days, commencing from November 24. This demanding fixture list includes travels to DR Congo to take on TP Mazembe and Egypt to confront Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League.

The AFL victory has set the stage for this relentless calendar, compounded by the six-week hiatus in the domestic league for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast. While Sundowns boast a versatile squad, well-equipped to handle such a rigorous lineup, injuries have posed challenges this season, adding pressure to their already extended run.

Exiting the Carling Knockout early spared Sundowns from further scheduling clashes with the Champions League, providing a brief window for regrouping during the FIFA international break. However, this break doesn't necessarily entail rest for several players, as they gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, involving not just the games but also the taxing travel involved.

Having already played 21 matches across all competitions, albeit only eight in the DStv Premiership, within a span of 101 days, Sundowns have been enduring a punishing schedule, averaging a game every 4.8 days. As they gear up to resume action later this month, the pace intensifies, culminating in a more demanding rate of a game every 3.7 days, signifying an even more grueling phase for the team.
