Mamelodi Sundowns, a South African team, managed to secure their place in the African Football League (AFL) semi-finals, despite an early red card that reduced them to ten players during their 0-0 draw against Petro Atletico on Tuesday.
In a challenging situation, midfielder Mothobi Mvala received a red card just two minutes into the game, putting Sundowns at a disadvantage in front of their home crowd. However, the South African team displayed a heroic defensive performance, successfully thwarting Petro Atletico's attempts to overturn their 2-0 deficit from the first leg.
Although Petro held the numerical advantage and dominated possession, they couldn't break through Sundowns' resolute defense or convert it into a goal. After a relentless onslaught in the second half, Sundowns' defense limited Petro to only three shots on target.
The goalless draw ensured that Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the semi-finals with a 2-0 aggregate lead. They will now face Al Ahly in a two-legged semi-final tie with hopes of reaching the AFL final.
