Mainz stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 victory at home on Saturday, handing coach Vincent Kompany his first league loss of the season. Jae-sung Lee was the star of the match, scoring both goals for Mainz, one in each half.
Despite dominating possession, Bayern Munich, missing several key players due to injury, including Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer, failed to capitalize on their chances. Mainz, who have a strong recent record against Bayern at home, took advantage of the visitors' uncharacteristic poor form.
Lee opened the scoring shortly before halftime, capitalizing on a poor clearance from Bayern's Min-Jae Kim. In the second half, Mainz extended their lead through Lee once again, who finished brilliantly after a clever assist from Armindo Sieb.
Bayern, aware that Bayer Leverkusen were leading their match, tried to rally but lacked precision and energy. Leroy Sane scored a late goal for Bayern in the 87th minute, but Mainz held firm to secure the famous home win.
The result lifted Mainz to sixth place in the Bundesliga standings, a remarkable rise considering their relegation struggles last season.
Meanwhile, Bayern's defeat leaves them just four points clear at the top, with Bayer Leverkusen's 2-0 victory over Augsburg cutting the gap. Leverkusen's seventh consecutive win was built on goals from Martin Terrier and Florian Wirtz, who scored in the 14th and 40th minutes, respectively.
In other Bundesliga action, Union Berlin drew 1-1 at home against bottom-placed Bochum, in a match interrupted by a disturbing incident when the visiting goalkeeper was struck by an object thrown from the crowd.
Despite playing with a man advantage following a red card for Bochum, Union was unable to capitalize, and the match ended in a draw. Borussia Moenchengladbach secured a comfortable 4-1 win over Holstein Kiel, with Alassane Plea scoring twice, while Kiel remains near the bottom of the table.
