Tottenham Hotspur secured a much-needed home victory in the Premier League as James Maddison’s early goal proved decisive in a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Maddison, returning to the starting lineup after an injury, capitalized on a rebound in the 13th minute to end Spurs’ 105-day wait for a home league triumph.
The victory lifted Ange Postecoglou’s side to 12th place with 30 points, easing pressure on the Australian manager. Meanwhile, United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim continued, with the Portuguese coach suffering his eighth defeat in 14 league matches, dropping his side to 15th with 29 points.
Despite the defeat, United had their opportunities to level the match, most notably when Alejandro Garnacho squandered a clear chance in the first half. Rasmus Hojlund also tested Tottenham’s returning goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, who made crucial saves throughout the match.
Postecoglou had reasons to be optimistic, as his squad’s injury crisis appeared to be easing with Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert, and Brennan Johnson all returning to the matchday squad. In contrast, United’s injury woes deepened with the news that Amad Diallo, one of their bright sparks this season, could be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.
Before kickoff, Tottenham fans staged a protest against chairman Daniel Levy’s management of the club, but Maddison’s goal helped lift the mood inside the stadium.
The breakthrough came after Son Heung-min’s cross found Lucas Bergvall, whose shot was parried by Andre Onana into Maddison’s path for a simple finish. United pressed forward in search of an equalizer, with Garnacho misfiring from close range and Joshua Zirkzee glancing a header wide.
As the match progressed, United grew in confidence, forcing Spurs to defend deeper. Garnacho tested Vicario twice in the second half, but the Italian goalkeeper stood firm. Despite late pressure, Tottenham held on for consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time in 16 months, offering a glimmer of hope for their season.
