Lyon failed to take advantage of results elsewhere in Ligue 1 on Saturday, suffering a 2-1 defeat at Brest, which prevented them from moving up to third in the standings.
With Monaco's draw against Nantes and Lille's stalemate with Auxerre, Lyon had a chance to close the gap to the final automatic Champions League spot, but their loss left them stuck in fifth place.
Brest, who had been coming off a loss to Angers, took an early lead in the eighth minute through Mahdi Camara, who followed up a save from Lyon's goalkeeper Lucas Perri after Ludovic Ajorque's shot.
Ajorque then doubled the hosts' advantage in the 25th minute, scoring his fifth goal of the season after receiving a clever flicked pass from Camara.
Lyon responded with a goal in first-half added time, as Jordan Veretout pulled one back to offer hope for a second-half comeback.
However, despite pressing for an equalizer, Lyon could not break through Brest's defense, with Alexandre Lacazette's header being denied by goalkeeper Marco Bizot. The result leaves Lyon six points adrift of third, while Brest moved six points clear of the relegation zone.
