Lyon Manager Fabio Grosso decries bus attack, calls for lessons from the incident

Posted : 02 November 2023
Lyon manager Fabio Grosso has expressed his deep concern over the attack on the Ligue 1 team's bus that occurred last Sunday, emphasizing that it "could have been a tragedy." The team's bus was pelted with stones and bricks as they were en route to the Stade Vélodrome for a league match against Marseille, which was subsequently postponed. Grosso, who sustained injuries, including cuts to his forehead and left eye, has shared his thoughts on the incident via an Instagram post.

In his message, Grosso stated, "What happened on Sunday evening could have been a tragedy, and it certainly was for sport and for all those who love it. I hope with all my heart that it can be a lesson for our future. Thank you for all your support and your closeness." The attack also left his assistant, Raffaele Longo, injured.

The French government strongly condemned the violence that unfolded around the Marseille stadium during the weekend and reported the arrest of nine individuals in connection with the incident. Lyon, in a statement, decried the recurring nature of such violence in Marseille, calling upon authorities to address its seriousness and repetition before a more severe tragedy occurs. The club has also requested that their postponed Ligue 1 fixture against Marseille be relocated to a neutral venue due to concerns about player safety.

Grosso, who refrained from overseeing the team's training session on Tuesday, observed part of the practice while wearing a cap to conceal the bandage on his head. The 2006 World Cup-winning Italian, aged 45, took over as Lyon's coach in September, but the team currently faces challenges in Ligue 1 as they sit at the bottom of the standings without a victory in their first nine matches. They are scheduled to host Metz in their upcoming fixture on Sunday.
