Luton return to Premier League after 31-year absence
Posted : 27 May 2023
When Luton defeated Coventry on penalties in the Championship Playoff Final on Saturday at Wembley, they earned promotion to the Premier League.
When Fankaty Dabo stepped up and sent his attempt well over the bar, the tension reached unimaginable heights. The first 11 penalties in the shootout all went into the goal. After a frantic encounter, Luton won the shootout 6-5 thanks to his miss, securing their spot in the top division for the first time in 31 years.
Six minutes into the match, Luton's defender Gabriel Osho had a goal disallowed for offside. But less than 20 minutes later, Elijah Adebayo shrugged from Kyle McFadzean's tackle before cutting to the inside.
Viktor Gyokeres was sent down the wing and cut back to Gustavo Hamer on the edge of the box for him to blast it past Ethan Horvath and force extra time as Coventry continued to control the second half.
Dabo would be heartbroken that he was the one who made the crucial mistake after 11 flawless penalties. Goals continued coming, but eventually someone was going to miss, and regretfully for Dabo, he far missed the mark; a horrible experience that will take him some time to get over.
