Luton boss: Onyedinma's speed was needed with Porro

Posted : 02 April 2024

Luton Town's manager, Rob Edwards, acknowledges the crucial role Lagos-born winger Fred Onyedinma plays in the team's bid for Premier League survival. With just eight rounds remaining in the 2023-2024 season, the Hatters find themselves in relegation trouble, accumulating only 22 points.

The team is currently grappling with an injury crisis, with nearly half of the squad sidelined due to various injuries. Among those injured are three players of Nigerian descent: Elijah Adebayo, Gabriel Osho, and Chiedozie Ogbene. Additionally, several other key players, including Thomas Lockyer, Amari'i Bell, and Marvelous Nakamba, are doubtful for their upcoming clash against Arsenal.

Given the mounting injuries, Edwards is inclined to continue giving playing time to Onyedinma, who recently made his return to action for Luton Town after a ten-month absence. In their recent 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Onyedinma made his Premier League debut, coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute.

Edwards explained his decision to introduce Onyedinma during the Tottenham game, citing the winger's speed as a key factor. He noted that Onyedinma's pace was necessary to counteract the threat posed by Tottenham's marauding fullback, Pedro Porro, who was causing problems for the defense.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Onyedinma performed admirably after coming off the bench, even taking up the left-back position when required due to an injury substitution.

For Onyedinma, Saturday's match against Tottenham Hotspur marked his first competitive appearance since November 24, 2023. His return to action provides a much-needed boost to Luton Town as they navigate through a crucial phase in their battle for Premier League survival.
