Lukaku returns to face Inter Milan amid hostile reception, Napoli awaits struggling AC Milan
Posted : 28 October 2023
Romelu Lukaku is bracing for a hostile reception as he returns to the San Siro, now playing for Roma on loan from Chelsea, to face Serie A leaders Inter Milan. The Inter fans, once adoring Lukaku, have turned against him, viewing him as a traitor who abandoned the club not once, but twice. Lukaku's summer departure from Inter and his subsequent actions soured relations, with fans considering him disloyal.
The Belgian striker, who was instrumental in Inter's Serie A win in 2021, was sold to Chelsea for over €100 million, as Inter sought to address financial difficulties. He returned to Italy on loan last year but disappeared from negotiations when Inter aimed to sign him permanently, causing anger among fans and the club's hierarchy. This maneuver led to Lukaku's fall from grace, with even his former teammate Lautaro Martinez expressing disappointment.
Despite the controversy, both Lukaku and Inter have moved on. Martinez has been in stunning form, scoring 12 goals in 12 matches, while Lukaku has found success at Roma with seven goals in nine appearances, reuniting with coach Jose Mourinho.
In the upcoming clash, Roma will be without key players like Paulo Dybala, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Renato Sanches. Mourinho will also be absent as he serves a suspension. Inter leads Serie A by one point, and Milan faces Napoli after a humbling defeat at PSG. Napoli, trailing Inter by five points, seeks to prove its strength against one of Italy's top teams, particularly in the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen.
The stage is set for a compelling Sunday in Serie A as Lukaku faces his former club, Inter Milan, while Napoli takes on AC Milan, aiming to assert its strength in the league.
