Lucy Bronze: England women's football team aims to lead the way in gender equality
Posted : 24 September 2023
Lucy Bronze, a key player in the England women's football team, expressed optimism about the team's ability to set an example in women's football after reaching an agreement with the Football Association (FA) regarding performance-related bonuses. The agreement was disclosed by Lionesses captain Millie Bright ahead of their Women's Nations League victory over Scotland.
Bronze, who was part of the leadership group involved in negotiations with the FA, highlighted that such agreements have been in place for the USA's national team for many years. She emphasized that England aims to lead the way both on and off the pitch, setting standards that can inspire other countries to follow suit.
The 31-year-old right-back said, "We're happy to have been able to draw a line on the bonuses and move forward with the FA and the PFA [Professional Footballers' Association], making sure we are challenging women's football."
England, as European champions, had faced frustration when an agreement with the FA was not reached earlier, despite efforts made during the Women's World Cup. While players from other nations like Australia, Spain, and the USA received bonuses, England did not. However, this year marked a positive change, as players at the Women's World Cup received individual payments directly from Fifa.
This agreement between England's women's football team and the FA is another example of their successful advocacy for women's sports. After winning Euro 2022, the players wrote a letter to the government, resulting in funding for further opportunities in girls' school sports.
Notably, the USA's women's national team previously achieved equal pay through a legal dispute with US Soccer. England is scheduled to play the Netherlands in the Women's Nations League in Utrecht on Tuesday.
