Sunshine Stars FC on Sunday defeated Akwa United 2-0 at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), on match day 35, as the push for survival in the league continues.
The home team threw everything at the opponent's half in the early stages but couldn't get a breakthrough as the first half ended goalless.
Sunshine Stars' best chance came in the 47th minute when Lucky Nwafor's 26-yard shot caused some issues for the visitors' goalkeeper, but he later handled it.
Again, in the 49th minute, Promise Awosanmi got a chance after Lucky Nwafor's beautiful control in the vital area, but the Wizkid failed to shoot on target.
In search of an opener, Kennedy Boboye introduced Ibrahim Yusuf, Nelson Osahon, and Moses Omodumueke in the 56th minute. The trio replaced Promise Awosanmi, Mafeng Pam, and Sodiq Ibrahim.
Akwa United pushed further moments later but couldn't get a goal as Stars' defense was well coordinated by Emmanuel Ogbuagu and Ogechukwu Ogbu.
Kennedy Boboye introduced the young sensation Chinedu Nwosu in the 73rd minute. The Akure secondary commercial graduate replaced Opeoluwa Olufemi, and a few minutes later, he made the magic happen.
Lucky Nwafor was fortunate as Nedu's assist gave him a chance to score Sunshine Stars' opener in the 74th minute.
Two minutes after the opener, the rhythm changed, with fans chanting and the second goal arrived.
Yusuf Ibrahim scored from close range to put the tie beyond the visitors.
Port Harcourt's son, Duke Osimaga, was introduced in the 83rd minute. The midfielder replaced Lucky Nwafor.
Efforts by Sunshine Stars to increase the tally were thwarted by United's defense, and Akwa United failed to inspire as well.
The match ended 2-0 in favor of Sunshine Stars FC.
The technical adviser of the home team, Kennedy Boboye, appreciated the home fans for their support in his post-match statement, saying the team will continue to push until the league is over.
"It's a good result for us at home today. It's not over yet, but of course, we are happy with the result because it pushed us out of the danger zone. We won't relent."
Sunshine Stars' next elite league tie is against Doma United in Gombe on Wednesday.
