In the Copa Libertadores Round of 58 match between Argentinos Juniors and Fluminense, a horrifying injury occurred that left Luciano Sanchez of Argentinos Juniors with a broken leg. The incident took place when Real Madrid legend Marcelo, now playing for Fluminense, accidentally stepped on Sanchez's leg as he attempted a trick.
In the match held in Argentina, Marcelo's foot landed on Sanchez's bending leg, causing immediate distress to the Brazilian defender. He realized the severity of the injury and was visibly emotional, receiving a direct red card for the unintentional foul.
Sanchez had to be replaced, and it was reported that he would require surgery and rehabilitation lasting between eight months and a year.
After the match, Marcelo took to social media to express his feelings about the incident. He stated that he experienced a very difficult moment on the pitch and inadvertently injured his colleague. He offered his heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery to Luciano Sanchez, sending him all the strength in the world.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Gabriel Abalos scoring for Argentinos Juniors in the 14th minute, and Samuel equalizing for Fluminense in the 87th minute.
However, both teams faced challenges as Alexis Arias of Argentinos Juniors was also sent off in the 76th minute, and he, along with the injured Marcelo and Sanchez, will be absent from the upcoming match next week.
