LSFA reduces Smart City FC 2-year ban

Posted : 04 March 2025

Following the two-year ban imposed on Lagos State-based NNL side, Smart City Football Club, by the board of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), and in response to an appeal letter and request for leniency from the club's management, the LSFA Disciplinary Committee, after reviewing the merits and demerits of the case, decided to reduce the sanctions.

At the LSFA Disciplinary Committee meeting held at the Surulere Secretariat, with LSFA Vice-Chairman Adedotun Coker and other committee members in full attendance, representatives of Smart City, led by Alhaji Kamaldeen Olawoye, Club Secretary Wale Afolayan, and Team Manager Adebiyi Ojo, pleaded extensively for leniency and expressed remorse. As a result, the following decisions were announced:

The LSFA Disciplinary Committee justified the reduction based on the well-being and future of the players, as well as the potential negative impact on their careers.

The committee also considered the club's swift action in apprehending the violent football fan responsible for the incident and handing him over to the Nigerian Police for further prosecution, which influenced the decision to reduce the sanctions.

The ban was reduced to one year, beginning with a three-month suspension from March to June 2025. Additionally, the team remains excluded from the Lagos State President Federation Cup for the 2025/2026 season.

The financial sanction was reduced from N6 million to N3 million.

Smart City FC remains banned from participating in all LSFA-sanctioned football competitions.
