Lookman vs Gasperini: Five reasons to leave Atalanta now

Posted : 20 February 2025

Ademola Lookman’s time at Atalanta appears uncertain following a public disagreement with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The relationship between the Nigerian forward and his manager has become strained, casting doubt over his future at the club.

According to reports, Lookman is expected to leave Atalanta at the end of the season, with plans for his departure having been set in motion as early as last year. Despite the club's intention to ease tensions between the player and coach, there seems to be no change in their stance regarding his transfer.

Since joining Atalanta in 2022, Lookman has played an important role, contributing significantly to the team’s success. His hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen was a historic moment, helping the club secure its first-ever European trophy. However, recent events suggest that his time in Bergamo may be drawing to a close.

The 27-year-old forward may now need to consider moving on to a new challenge. A combination of factors, including his relationship with Gasperini, the club’s long-term plans, and interest from other teams, indicate that a summer exit might be the best decision.

1. Strained Relationship with the Coach

The tension between Lookman and Gasperini escalated after Atalanta’s Champions League exit against Club Brugge. Gasperini openly criticized Lookman’s penalty-taking skills, labeling him as one of the worst he had ever seen. Such public remarks have further damaged their relationship, making it difficult for Lookman to continue thriving under his current manager.

2. Negative Impact of Public Criticism

A coach’s words can shape a player’s confidence, and Gasperini’s comments seem to have done more harm than good. Lookman responded on social media, describing the remarks as disrespectful and clarifying that he had stepped up for the penalty only after being asked by the designated taker. Being singled out in such a manner, especially after a crucial match, could make it difficult for him to perform at his best.

3. Future Plans and Transfer Possibilities

Reports suggest that Atalanta had already planned for Lookman’s departure in 2025, regardless of the recent controversy. If the club no longer sees him as a key part of their project, staying could lead to reduced playing time or a less prominent role. A move to another team could provide him with a fresh start and a more stable environment.

4. Growing Interest from Other Clubs

Lookman’s performances in both Serie A and the Europa League have attracted interest from top European teams. His ability to score crucial goals and deliver in big matches makes him an appealing option for clubs looking to strengthen their attack. A switch to a team with Champions League aspirations could be the next logical step in his career.

5. Need for a Supportive Environment

The recent dispute suggests that Lookman may not have the backing he needs at Atalanta. Moving to a club where he feels valued and supported could help him reach new heights. Working with a coach who appreciates his abilities and encourages his development would provide him with the ideal setting to continue improving.

Given these factors, Lookman might be better off considering a transfer this summer. A fresh start at a new club could offer him the chance to rebuild his confidence, compete at a high level, and play in an environment that fully supports his growth.
