Ademola Lookman, a standout player for Atalanta, recently shared how he discovered his nomination for the Ballon d'Or. Lookman, who has been recognized as one of the top 30 footballers for this prestigious award, was both thrilled and surprised by the news.
The 26-year-old winger faces competition from renowned talents including Vinicius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, Rodri, and Dani Carvajal. Despite this tough competition, Lookman views the nomination as a major achievement in his football career.
In an interview with Counter Attack Podcast, Lookman recounted discovering his nomination while traveling with the team. He noticed a post from the Super Eagles' social media account announcing his inclusion in the Ballon d'Or shortlist.
"I was on the bus heading back from training when I saw the post. It was a bit unexpected," Lookman admitted, reflecting on the surge of notifications he received after the announcement.
Lookman revealed that he initially did not fully appreciate the significance of the nomination until he discussed it with his teammate, Calvin Bassey. "Calvin was extremely excited when I told him. He was like, 'You don’t really understand what this means.' That was when it hit me," Lookman explained.
His Ballon d'Or nomination stems from his impressive performances with both Atalanta and the Nigerian national team. Lookman played a pivotal role in Atalanta's UEFA Europa League victory, notably scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.
Furthermore, Lookman contributed significantly to the Super Eagles' runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His nomination makes him the eighth Super Eagles player to be recognized with a Ballon d'Or nomination throughout the award's history.
