Lookman moves past penalty controversy in Juventus thrashing victory

Posted : 11 March 2025

Nigerian footballers Ademola Lookman and Umar Sadiq were among Africa’s standout players in Europe’s top leagues over the weekend, while Mohamed Salah further cemented his legacy in the English Premier League with a milestone achievement. The Liverpool star’s brace against Southampton propelled him into the top five goal-scorers in the league’s history.

Lookman, who holds the title of Africa’s best footballer, has been in remarkable form and remains a strong contender to retain his individual crown. His latest goal came in Atalanta’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Juventus, continuing his impressive scoring streak. The Nigerian forward found the net in the closing stages, capitalizing on a defensive error to seal the win.

Controversy surrounded Lookman’s involvement earlier in the game when Juventus appealed for a handball decision against him. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ultimately ruled in his favor, but a similar offense from Juve’s Weston McKennie resulted in a penalty for Atalanta. This decision shifted the momentum of the game, allowing Lookman’s side to dominate.

Despite media scrutiny focusing on Juventus’ struggles and coach Thiago Motta’s uncertain future, Atalanta’s strong attacking display proved why they remain in contention for the Serie A title. Lookman’s contributions have been pivotal, helping the club stay in the race against league leaders Inter Milan. His performances continue to shine despite a recent public dispute with coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

The fallout from Lookman’s missed penalty in the Champions League had led to harsh criticism from Gasperini, but the forward responded with professionalism on the pitch. His recent goals, including a brace against Empoli, have reaffirmed his importance to the team. A post-match embrace between Lookman and Gasperini suggested that tensions may have eased, with the coach even praising him as a future captain.

Meanwhile, Umar Sadiq has rediscovered his goal-scoring form at Valencia following his loan move from Real Sociedad. The Nigerian striker has already matched his previous league goal tally with four goals in just seven appearances. His latest effort secured Valencia a crucial 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid, lifting them just above the relegation zone in La Liga.

Salah, on the other hand, made history by equaling Sergio Aguero’s Premier League goal tally with a double against Southampton. His two penalties secured a 3-1 win for Liverpool, strengthening their title bid. Now among the club’s all-time top scorers, Salah continues to add to his legacy and has a chance to claim another trophy when Liverpool faces Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
