Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted to making a substitution error during his team’s 1-0 defeat to Lazio in a tightly contested Serie A fixture on Sunday at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.
Early in the second half, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru nearly gave Lazio the lead with a powerful strike from outside the box, forcing a crucial save from Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.
Moments later, in the 50th minute, Lazio’s shot-stopper Christos Mandas was called into action at the other end, stopping a close-range effort from Mateo Retegui following a swift attacking sequence that saw Ademola Lookman involved.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 54th minute when a defensive lapse by Atalanta allowed Gustav Isaksen to pounce. Dele-Bashiru’s intelligent header created the opening, which Isaksen converted to put Lazio in front.
As Atalanta searched for an equalizer, Gasperini surprised fans and analysts alike by withdrawing both Lookman and Retegui in the 74th minute, opting instead to introduce Daniel Maldini and Lazar Samardzic.
Lookman, clearly displeased, left the field and took his seat on the bench showing signs of frustration, a reaction that drew attention from the cameras and crowd alike.
Post-match, Gasperini explained the substitution confusion, revealing that he had intended to remove Ederson but was misheard by the technical staff. “I said ‘Ede’, but they took it as ‘Ade’,” he told DAZN, referencing the mix-up that saw Lookman substituted by mistake. The Nigerian forward has now gone three league games without a goal, a rare dry spell in what has otherwise been a strong campaign.
