Ademola Lookman recently shared his thoughts on Atalanta's match against Arsenal in their opening UEFA Champions League game of the season, held at the Gewiss Stadium on Thursday night. The match concluded in a 0-0 draw, with both teams managing to thwart each other's scoring opportunities, although Atalanta had a chance to secure a goal from the penalty spot.
Just three minutes into the second half, referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty to Atalanta after Thomas Partey fouled Ederson in the box. Mateo Retegui stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort was spectacularly saved by David Raya, who not only denied the initial shot but also thwarted Retegui's follow-up attempt.
Following the missed penalty, Atalanta struggled to find the net as Arsenal's defense held strong, ensuring the game ended without any goals. This result highlighted the defensive prowess of both teams, particularly Arsenal, known for their solid backline.
In a post-match interview with the club's YouTube channel, Lookman expressed satisfaction with their performance against the formidable Premier League side. He acknowledged that although they did not secure a victory, they were competitive and displayed resilience across the pitch.
"Arsenal is a tough opponent, likely one of the strongest teams in the Champions League," Lookman remarked. He noted that their ability to compete against such a high-caliber team was a positive takeaway from the match.
Lookman previously made headlines by scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, which played a crucial role in helping Atalanta qualify for the Champions League. Despite his impressive past performance, he has only made two appearances in this season's Champions League without finding the back of the net yet.
He now looks forward to his next chance to score, which will be on October 2 against Shakhtar Donetsk. With a determined mindset, Lookman is eager to make an impact and contribute to his team's success in the prestigious tournament.
