Liverpool's Anfield Road Stand extension delayed for Premier League game

Posted : 26 July 2023
Liverpool's much-anticipated extension to the Anfield Road Stand will not be completed in time for their opening Premier League home game against Bournemouth on 19 August. The ambitious project, which began in 2021, aims to add 7,000 seats and increase the stadium's capacity to 61,000.

The club's managing director, Andy Hughes, expressed gratitude to all involved in the complex construction project. However, due to the scale and intricacy of the development, the upper tier of the Anfield Road Stand will not be ready for use during the Bournemouth match.

To ensure a safe and efficient process, the main contractor, Buckingham, will work closely with Liverpool City Council's licensing team to implement a phased opening approach.

This is not the first time Liverpool has followed such a strategy for stadium expansions. In 2016, during the opening of their new Main Stand, the club played their first three games of the season away from home and gradually opened sections of the stand in phases.

While the extension won't be ready for the initial home fixture, Liverpool supporters can still enjoy matches at the existing Anfield Road Stand, which will remain open during the remainder of its development.

Fans can look forward to the completion of the project, which promises to enhance the stadium's atmosphere and accommodate more passionate supporters as the season progresses. Liverpool's Premier League campaign will kick off with an away match against Chelsea on 13 August.
