Liverpool has finalized a £35 million transfer deal to bring midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton to Anfield.
The Argentina playmaker, who aided Brighton in securing a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and European qualification, has signed a five-year contract with Liverpool.
The initial fee could potentially rise to £55 million. Mac Allister, 24, contributed 20 goals in 112 appearances for Brighton and played a crucial role in Argentina's victory in the 2022 World Cup.
Expressing his excitement, Mac Allister said, "It's a dream come true, and I can't wait. I wanted to be here from the first day of pre-season, so it's great that everything is finalized. I'm eager to meet my teammates. It has been a fantastic year for me, with the World Cup triumph and our achievements at Brighton. But now, it's time to focus on Liverpool and strive to become a better player and individual every day."
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp seeks to strengthen his midfield following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.
The club was unable to pursue a move for Borussia Dortmund's young English talent Jude Bellingham due to financial constraints. Bellingham is expected to join Real Madrid after the clubs agreed on a fee of 103 million euros (£88.5 million).
Mac Allister joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 and immediately returned to the Buenos Aires club on loan. He has represented Argentina 16 times and emerged as a key player during their third World Cup victory in December.
After sitting out their opening match against Saudi Arabia, he started the next six games and played a significant role in the final against France.
Expressing his ambition, Mac Allister stated, "Since winning the World Cup, I have expressed my desire to win more trophies, and I believe this club will help me achieve that. Winning trophies is the objective when you are part of a big club like this one. I can see the enormity of this club, from the players to the staff. I'm thrilled and eagerly anticipating playing for Liverpool."
Mac Allister expressed his gratitude to Brighton on Instagram, bidding farewell to the club that provided him with remarkable opportunities.
He wrote, "It's time to say goodbye to the club that opened doors for me and gave me incredible moments. I never imagined experiencing what I have in these three and a half years, but this club provided me with that opportunity, and I will forever be grateful. I have no doubt that this team will achieve significant things because they possess both footballing skills and human qualities. I will always watch and support them. Thank you, Seagulls, you will always hold a special place in my heart!"
