Liverpool is set to acquire Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for a reported €13 million, a substantial decrease from his €70 million valuation just three years ago. This bargain deal comes as Chiesa approaches the end of his contract with Juventus, and Liverpool will secure the transfer at a significantly reduced price. Chiesa, who was instrumental in Italy's Euro 2020 victory, is now valued at €35 million by Transfermarkt, reflecting a drop due to injuries and a challenging recent period.
The 26-year-old Chiesa arrived at John Lennon Airport for medical examinations at Liverpool’s Kirkby training facility. He is poised to sign a four-year contract with the Reds. Expressing his readiness for a new challenge, Chiesa spoke to Italian media before departing from Turin, indicating his excitement for this new chapter in his career.
If the transfer proceeds smoothly, Chiesa will be Liverpool’s first significant signing of the summer. The team has also secured goalkeeper Giorgi Mardashvili, though he has been loaned back to Venelsia. Chiesa’s arrival will bolster Liverpool’s attacking options, joining Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, and Darwin Nuñez. However, Nuñez could be affected by this new addition, having featured only as a substitute in Liverpool's opening games of the season.
Chiesa initially joined Juventus on loan from Fiorentina in 2020 before being purchased for €50 million. Over his tenure with Juventus, he scored 32 goals in 131 appearances and contributed 10 goals and three assists in 37 appearances last season. His earlier stint at Fiorentina saw him net 34 goals in 154 matches. Additionally, Chiesa has scored seven goals in 51 appearances for the Italian national team, playing a crucial role in their Euro 2020 triumph.
In addition to Chiesa, Liverpool is reportedly interested in Lyon's 21-year-old midfielder Ryan Sharkey. This potential move reflects Liverpool's ongoing efforts to strengthen their squad with young talent and bolster their midfield options for the upcoming season.
