Luis Díaz's father, who was kidnapped by the guerrilla group National Liberation Army (ELN) in northern Colombia, has been released by his captors, confirmed by Colombia's government. The release took place 12 days after his abduction, which had garnered international attention and calls for his freedom. Luis Díaz, who plays for Liverpool, participated in a match against Toulouse just hours after his father's release. Coach Jurgen Klopp stated that Díaz was "really happy" with the news.
Luis Manuel Díaz's kidnapping on October 28 had initially raised questions about the perpetrators. However, the Colombian government later revealed that it was an ELN unit responsible for the abduction. The ELN acknowledged the kidnapping and considered it a mistake, with the group's top leadership ordering the elder Díaz's release. Despite the initial challenges in facilitating the release, including military deployments in the region, the Colombian military shifted its positions to support a safe handover.
Luis Díaz's father returned to his hometown of Barrancas in the La Guajira region, escorted by authorities, where he emotionally thanked the people for their support. His mother, Cilenis Marulanda, had been rescued within hours of the kidnapping, while a massive search operation was conducted for his father. The United Nations and the Catholic Church played a role in facilitating the release, and Díaz's father received medical care before being taken to Valledupar, closer to Barrancas.
Luis Díaz, an esteemed player for both Colombia's national team and Liverpool, celebrated his father's release, marking a moment of relief and joy for his family and fans alike.
