Liverpool’s Arne Slott Makes History with Perfect Start, Six Away Wins

Posted : 24 October 2024

After a hard-fought 1-0 draw against RB Leipzig, Arne Slott, who took over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer, has made history by winning his first six away matches in the season—an achievement unprecedented for any manager at Liverpool. Reflecting on this accomplishment, Slott commented, "There's something nicer than records—and that's titles." His player, Virgil van Dijk, echoed this sentiment, encouraging Slott to maintain his current trajectory, stating, "He just has to keep going with what he's doing."

This season, out of the 36 teams competing in the Champions League, only Aston Villa and Liverpool boast a perfect record after three matches. The Reds secured their flawless start with a crucial goal from Darwin Núñez, which led to a 1-0 away victory over Leipzig on Wednesday. This win solidified Liverpool's standing as a formidable contender in the tournament.

While Núñez’s goal was pivotal, Slott has received significant acclaim for his extraordinary achievements in his debut season. He has now become the first manager in English football to secure 11 wins out of his first 12 matches across all competitions. Furthermore, under his leadership, Liverpool's six consecutive away victories mark a remarkable feat, one that no manager has ever accomplished in the club's 132-year history. Slott humbly acknowledged the magnitude of this achievement, stating, "To achieve something that has never been achieved before—especially in such a large group—is almost impossible."

In his post-match interview, Slott emphasized the importance of titles over records, hinting at the club's aspirations beyond mere statistics. With Liverpool leading the Premier League and striving for a third consecutive Champions League triumph, he highlighted the significance of continued improvement within the squad. Van Dijk supported this notion, expressing the joy and camaraderie among the players as they navigate the season together.

Although Slott's tenure has been largely successful, he faced a challenging moment when he substituted Mohamed Salah in the 60th minute, which reportedly displeased the star striker. The coach explained his decision by referencing the team's current injury situation and the need to preserve key players for upcoming matches, particularly a crucial game against Arsenal. The narrative surrounding Liverpool this season suggests a team that, despite having moments of inconsistency, is on a path that has opponents in the Premier League worried, as they look increasingly like an invincible side.
