Liverpool releases Nigerian-eligible defender for 2023-2024 season

Posted : 16 June 2023
Liverpool Football Club has recently revealed their retained and released list for the upcoming season of 2023-2024, and through their official website, they have made it known that Oludare Olufunwa, a central defender eligible to represent Nigeria, will not be retained.

The 21-year-old defender joined Liverpool in August 2022 after impressing during a trial period.

Prior to his arrival at Anfield, Olufunwa had spent an impressive twelve years with his hometown club, Southampton.

However, the young talent was released by Southampton in the summer of 2022, paving the way for his move to Liverpool.

Unfortunately, injuries played a significant role in hindering Olufunwa's progress during his time with the Reds.

As a result, he had limited opportunities to showcase his abilities, making appearances in only ten games across various competitions for the development squad.

These appearances included four games in the Premier League 2, two in the Papa Johns Trophy, and four in the Premier League International Cup.

Despite the challenges he faced, one standout moment in Olufunwa's Liverpool career came when he scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the Premier League International Cup.

It is worth noting that this impressive goal came while he was playing out of his usual position, demonstrating his adaptability and determination to contribute to the team's success.

As Liverpool makes their decisions for the upcoming season, it is clear that Olufunwa will now have the opportunity to embark on a new chapter in his football journey, seeking fresh opportunities and challenges outside the walls of Anfield.

While his time at Liverpool may have been brief, his talent and dedication remain noteworthy, and he will undoubtedly be eager to showcase his skills at his next destination.

The announcement of Olufunwa's release serves as a reminder of the highly competitive nature of professional football, where clubs must make difficult decisions regarding player retention.

As Liverpool fans and football enthusiasts look forward to the upcoming season, they eagerly await further developments in the club's transfer activities and squad restructuring, hoping for continued success on the pitch.
