Liverpool Prioritizes Player Rest Over Top Spot

Posted : 29 January 2025

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that the team will prioritize giving key players a break over maintaining their first-place position in the Champions League standings for their final league-phase match against PSV Eindhoven. Regular starters like captain Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson, and others including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, and Ryan Gravenberch have been left out of the squad for the Wednesday fixture. Despite leading the Premier League and remaining in the FA Cup and League Cup, Liverpool will focus on keeping their players fresh ahead of a busy schedule.

Slot explained that with the heavy demands of their competition schedule, it's important to rest the players whenever possible. He noted that the team had already given players breaks in previous weeks during the League Cup or FA Cup matches to ensure they stay fresh. “It’s been almost every time after three or four or five weeks, we gave them a break during the week,” Slot said, highlighting the importance of managing player fatigue over the course of the season.

While Liverpool have secured a place in the Champions League's last 16, they could be overtaken at the top of the group by Barcelona if they lose to PSV. However, Slot isn't overly concerned about finishing first or second, as both positions guarantee a spot in the knockout round. He emphasized that the current format makes the position irrelevant in terms of their next opponent, as the round of 16 draw will be based on a random selection of teams ranked 15th to 18th.

PSV, sitting 19th in the standings with 11 points, still have a chance to secure a playoff spot if they avoid defeat against Liverpool. Slot made it clear that while resting players is important, the team will still approach the game with the aim to win, despite the match's limited impact on their final position. "A very wise man once said to me, I've never seen anything good coming from losing a football game," he added, reinforcing that they will still aim for victory.
