Liverpool Nears Title as Champions League Battle Heats Up

Posted : 07 March 2025

Liverpool appear destined to claim the Premier League title, but the competition for Champions League qualification is becoming increasingly intense. With just six points separating third-placed Nottingham Forest from Aston Villa in tenth, the battle for a top-five finish—which is expected to guarantee a place in Europe's elite club tournament—is wide open.

Arsenal, currently in second place and trailing Liverpool by 13 points, have a comfortable gap over the chasing pack. Following their dominant 7-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, they will be eager to compound Manchester United’s struggles when they meet this weekend.

Liverpool head into their upcoming league fixture in high spirits after narrowly escaping with a 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, thanks in part to an outstanding performance from Alisson Becker. With the return leg at Anfield on the horizon, manager Arne Slot will appreciate a relatively straightforward challenge against bottom-placed Southampton.

The Saints, with only nine points from 27 games, are desperately trying to avoid setting a new Premier League record for the lowest points tally. Given the circumstances, Slot is expected to rotate his squad, with Wataru Endo, Darwin Núñez, and match-winner Harvey Elliott likely to feature prominently after making a strong impact in Paris.

Manchester City, who have endured a disappointing campaign, now find themselves in an unfamiliar position—fighting to secure Champions League qualification. Pep Guardiola’s side, who have won six of the last seven league titles, are in fourth place, trailing third-placed Forest by a single point. With fifth-placed Chelsea also just one point behind, City's trip to Forest this weekend carries significant weight.

Their opponents enjoyed an impressive run in December, winning six consecutive matches as they aimed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1980. However, recent form has been shaky, with only two victories in their last seven league games, which could give City an advantage.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will seek to maintain their attacking momentum when they travel to face Manchester United on Sunday. Although the Gunners could be 16 points behind Liverpool by kickoff, their focus will be on proving that their offensive resurgence is sustainable.

After a lackluster run of just two goals in four matches across all competitions, they found their scoring touch in a 7-1 demolition of PSV, nearly securing a Champions League quarterfinal spot in the process.

Despite injuries to key attackers such as Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal will look to build on their recent goal spree. Facing a struggling United side, who sit in 14th place and continue to grapple with defensive frailties, Arteta’s team has an ideal opportunity to reinforce their attacking prowess while keeping their European ambitions alive.
