Liverpool has initiated discussions with Feyenoord in an effort to secure Arne Slot, the club's head coach, as Jürgen Klopp's successor at Anfield, sources revealed to ESPN. Following Xabi Alonso's decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen and a waning interest in Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim, Slot, 45, has emerged as the frontrunner for the position.
However, with competition from Bayern Munich and Barcelona for Slot's services, Liverpool is eager to gain an edge by engaging with Feyenoord in potential negotiations. Last year, Slot rebuffed offers from Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as interest from Chelsea, to extend his tenure at Feyenoord until 2026, after securing the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 season.
If Liverpool wishes to secure Slot's services, they will need to agree on a compensation package with Feyenoord, estimated to be around £9 million ($11.2m), owing to his extended contract. Michael Edwards, leading Liverpool's manager search, previously recruited Klopp in 2015 and now spearheads the quest for Klopp's successor since returning to the club as head of football for Fenway Sports Group.
Liverpool faces Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday, aiming to narrow the gap with Premier League leaders Arsenal after their 5-0 triumph over Chelsea. Klopp's impending departure at the end of the season adds urgency to Liverpool's managerial pursuit as they strive to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
