Liverpool is close to finalizing the acquisition of Nigerian forward Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea. According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool has successfully completed the Premier League’s five-step review process, which clears the path for Ngumoha's transfer to the Reds.
This comprehensive review is a mandatory procedure for all academy player registrations, ensuring proper due diligence before finalizing any moves. The process is crucial for maintaining the integrity of player transfers within the league.
On Wednesday, Ngumoha confirmed his departure from Chelsea via social media, though he did not reveal his new club at that time. This confirmation aligns with reports of his impending transfer to Liverpool.
Ngumoha, born in 2008, opted to forego a scholarship offer from Chelsea in favor of joining Liverpool’s academy. He will begin his tenure with Liverpool in the U18 squad but is also eligible to be included in the Premier League roster as an U21 player or scholar.
During his last season with Chelsea, Ngumoha made nine appearances in the U18 Premier League, scoring once and providing an assist. He also had a debut for Chelsea’s development squad in the Premier League Cup.
At just 15 years old, Ngumoha trained with Chelsea’s first team under Mauricio Pochettino, highlighting his potential and the high regard in which he is held by the coaching staff at Stamford Bridge.
Ngumoha will join fellow Nigeria-eligible players Wellity Lucky Omoruyi, Louis Enahoro-Marcus, and Afolami Onanuga at Liverpool’s academy, further strengthening the club’s youth setup.
