With his impressive performance of 5 goals in 9 Premier League games, Crystal Palace's Michael Olise is gaining attention from top clubs, particularly Liverpool, who are eyeing him as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah during the African Championship.
Despite previous speculations linking him to Chelsea, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain, a unique competition for Olise's services is emerging on the international stage.
Born in London to a Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother, the 22-year-old winger is eligible to represent four national teams: Nigeria, Algeria, France, and England. Nigeria and Algeria have already expressed interest, with Olise being on standby for Nigeria in the past, but he is yet to make appearances for any senior teams.
Last summer, he played for France at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, contributing with a crucial goal against Norway.
Amidst growing speculation, voices in England are urging Gareth Southgate to call up Olise to the national team. Despite representing France at the youth level, there remains uncertainty about his international allegiance.
Olise has declined the opportunity to play in the African Championship for Nigeria or Algeria, indicating his indecision on the matter.
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson commented on the situation, stating, "Which team will Michael represent? It's a private matter for him. If he asks for my advice, I'll be happy to give it, but I think it's between him and his parents."
Olise's journey includes stints in Chelsea's youth department and Manchester City before embarking on his senior career with Reading. Palace acquired him for £8.4 million in the summer of 2021, and since returning from injury in mid-November, he has demonstrated remarkable skill on the field.
