Liverpool and Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq have reached a deal in principle for the transfer of captain Jordan Henderson, with the deal valued at £12m plus potential add-ons.
Despite traveling to Germany with Liverpool for their training camp, Henderson was not part of the squad in their 4-2 friendly win over Karlsruher. The 33-year-old England midfielder still has two years remaining on his contract at Anfield.
Steven Gerrard, former Liverpool captain, is now the manager of Al-Ettifaq, making the move even more significant. Liverpool had also received a £40m offer from Al-Ittihad for midfielder Fabinho, but unlike Henderson, the 29-year-old Brazilian did not join the team in Germany while his future is being sorted out.
The summer has seen several high-profile players make moves to Saudi Arabia, including Karim Benzema, the former Real Madrid striker, and N'Golo Kante, the ex-Chelsea midfielder.
Former Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino also joined Al-Ahli after his contract with Anfield expired, while rumors have linked Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez with a potential move to the club.
