Liverpool acquire midfielder Wataru Endo for €19m

Posted : 18 August 2023
Liverpool has secured the signing of midfielder Wataru Endo from Stuttgart, sealing the deal for approximately 19 million euros (£16.2 million), pending a work permit and international clearance. The 30-year-old Japanese international has committed to a four-year contract with the club.

Liverpool's acquisition of Endo comes after their unsuccessful attempts to secure signings such as Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who ultimately joined Chelsea. Although Endo is versatile enough to play at centre-back, his primary role with Liverpool will be as a central defensive midfielder.

Endo expressed his excitement about the move, describing it as a dream come true to play in the Premier League with one of the world's biggest clubs. He believes he can contribute to Liverpool's defense and provide strong organizational skills in the midfield.

As the captain of the Japanese national team and having held the same position at Stuttgart, Endo brings leadership to the team. This signing follows the departure of several midfielders, including Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool's manager, Jurgen Klopp, welcomed the addition of Endo, highlighting his experience and strong work ethic. Klopp expressed his satisfaction with the signing, emphasizing Endo's qualities as a player.

Endo's journey to Liverpool started with a season-long loan to Stuttgart from Belgian club Sint-Truiden in 2019. His performances earned him a permanent transfer a year later. Throughout his time with Stuttgart, Endo has been a reliable player and captain, contributing not only through his goals but also his overall impact on and off the field.

Stuttgart's manager, Sebastian Hoeness, acknowledged the significance of Endo's departure both in terms of his footballing abilities and his character. Hoeness wished him the best as he embarks on his dream of playing in the Premier League at the age of 30, considering it a testament to the player and the club's journey.
