Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami's opening match of their Leagues Cup defense on Saturday against Puebla, according to Miami coach Gerardo Martino. The 37-year-old Argentine forward is still recovering from a right ankle injury sustained during his national team's victory over Colombia in the Copa America final earlier this month. As a result, Messi was also absent from two MLS matches last week and the MLS All-Star Game against Liga MX All-Stars on Wednesday.
Martino provided an update on Messi's condition, noting that the striker remains in a walking boot while undergoing treatment with the club's trainers. However, the coach assured that "the ankle is getting better and better." Despite this progress, Messi's recovery timeline means he will not be available for the Leagues Cup opener.
Last year, Messi played a pivotal role in leading Inter Miami to victory in the inaugural edition of the Leagues Cup, which features teams from MLS and Mexican clubs competing in a World Cup-style format. This year, the competition begins with 15 three-team groups in the first round, with two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stages, along with Club America and Columbus Crew, the reigning league champions.
In other Leagues Cup action, Orlando City defeated Montreal 4-1, DC United edged Atlanta 6-5 on penalties after a 3-3 draw, and Austin narrowly won 3-2 against Pumas despite being down to 10 men. DC United's upcoming home match against Santos Laguna has been relocated to Subaru Park, the Philadelphia Union's stadium, due to concerns over field conditions at Audi Field in Washington. The Leagues Cup organizers have fined DC United an undisclosed amount related to these field condition issues.
