Inter Miami CF is making plans for Lionel Messi's debut on July 21 in a Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul, according to owner Jorge Mas. Although Messi, 35, has expressed his intention to sign with Miami after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, the deal has yet to be finalized.
During an interview with a small group of reporters, including the Miami Herald, Mas clarified that the club will not receive direct subsidy from the MLS, and no rules will be altered to accommodate Messi on Inter Miami's roster.
The club intends for Messi to make his debut at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, against Mexican team Cruz Azul on July 21. In preparation for Messi's arrival, Miami is working on expanding the stadium's capacity to 22,000 by adding around 3,000 seats. Enhanced security measures will also be implemented for both home and away games.
Mas highlighted Argentina's training in Miami before heading to the 2022 World Cup in Doha, where the club witnessed the fervor surrounding Messi on a daily basis. As a result, Miami has been diligently preparing for this moment.
Messi, the Argentina captain, expressed his eagerness and readiness to face this new challenge after rejecting offers from Barcelona and Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
Mas believes that Messi's arrival will be a transformative event for Major League Soccer, urging other owners to seize the opportunity. He emphasized the significance of having the world's greatest player in the United States, stating that it will have a profound impact on the league and the football ecosystem in the country. Mas and other owners are determined to make the most of this momentous occasion.
