Lionel Messi showcased his full fitness by scoring both goals in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Peru during their 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. Messi returned to the starting lineup after being sidelined or appearing as a substitute for the past four weeks due to a muscle issue, with his last start dating back to September 20 when he played for Inter Miami against Toronto FC.
The 36-year-old maestro opened the scoring for the world champions in the 32nd minute with a magnificent strike, assisted by Nicolas Gonzalez. He extended the lead to 2-0 just ten minutes later with a powerful finish, capitalizing on a pass from Enzo Fernandez.
Despite having a goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review in the second half, Messi's double propelled him to become CONMEBOL's top scorer in World Cup qualifiers with a total of 31 goals, surpassing Uruguay's Luis Suarez.
Speaking of the team's performance, Messi expressed his admiration, stating, "This team is incredible; every time they play, they are very close to being the best in history." He highlighted their growth and confidence after their recent World Cup victory, emphasizing their unity and firmness.
Coach Lionel Scaloni emphasized the team's synchronization with Messi and expressed the hope that the football icon would continue to grace the pitch as Argentina maintains its leading position in the CONMEBOL standings. Argentina is set to host Uruguay on November 16, followed by a clash with Brazil five days later.
