Lionel Messi's world cup-winning jerseys set for record-breaking auction
Posted : 21 November 2023
Six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's victorious World Cup campaign are set to be auctioned at Sotheby's in New York. The collection includes Messi's shirt from the final against France, where Argentina emerged victorious. The auction, expected to surpass £8 million, marks a historic event in auction history. Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's head of modern collectibles, highlighted the significance of Messi's journey and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, establishing Messi's status as the greatest player of all time.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient, achieved a unique feat in World Cup history, scoring in the group stage, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final of a single tournament. Sotheby's plans to exhibit Messi's shirts at its New York headquarters during the public auction, open from November 30 to December 14. Although Messi played in all seven of Argentina's 2022 World Cup matches, only two of the three group stage shirts will be auctioned, as one was exchanged with Australia's Cameron Devlin.
The auction will support the Unicas Project, led by Sant Joan de Deu (SJD) Barcelona Children's Hospital, in collaboration with the Leo Messi Foundation. This initiative aims to address the needs of children suffering from rare diseases, adding a philanthropic dimension to the historic event. Messi's shirts are expected to draw considerable attention from football enthusiasts and collectors alike, capturing the brilliance of a player who has redefined the boundaries of football excellence.
