Lionel Messi has decided not to participate in this summer's Olympics with Argentina, deeming it too demanding to compete in Paris following the Copa América. Currently preparing to defend their Copa América title, Argentina faces Canada in their opening match on June 20, with the final scheduled for July 14. The Olympic men's tournament, primarily for under-23 players with three overage slots, runs from July 24 to August 9. Messi told ESPN Argentina that he discussed the situation with Argentina U23 coach Javier Mascherano, and they mutually agreed that it would be impractical for him to compete in both tournaments.
Messi explained that playing in both events would require two to three months away from his club, Inter Miami, and at his age, it is crucial to manage his commitments wisely. He reminisced about his previous Olympic experience in 2008, where he won gold with Mascherano, and expressed his hope that the current players would cherish the opportunity as much as he did. Despite the allure of the Olympics, Messi emphasized the need to prioritize and balance his professional and personal life.
Messi's decision means he could miss at least five Inter Miami games while participating in the Copa América, and several more if he had opted to play in the Olympics. Inter Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino has previously stated that players should choose between the Copa América and the Olympics due to their close scheduling, which would result in players being away from their club for an extended period. Martino, who has to manage multiple players' absences due to summer tournaments, supports the need for players to prioritize one event over the other.
Messi has been instrumental for Inter Miami this season, contributing 11 goals and 12 assists in 12 matches, helping the team reach the top of the Supporters' Shield standings. With a record eight Ballon d'Or awards, Messi has completed a full set of international titles, including the Copa América in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022. His decision to focus on the Copa América underscores his commitment to balancing club and international duties effectively.
