It's improbable that Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain would come to an agreement to prolong his term at the team, according to insiders.
L'Equipe, a French news outlet, broke the story first. According to insiders, talks between the two parties have stalled, raising serious concerns over the World Cup winner's future in Paris.
The French champions want Messi to accept a wage drop of 25% from his current salary, which is worth a gross of €40 million annually.
To find a resolution, a second meeting between the club and Messi's father and agent, Jorge, is still planned for later this month.
Before the World Cup, a new contract for Messi was probably in the works, but things have since altered.
With PSG, Messi has been unable to emulate his stellar World Cup performance, and the team is skeptical about Messi's ability to perform well in crucial Champions League games.
