Patrick Ngwaogu, the sponsor of the Unity Pre-season Tournament, says the victory of Like-minds FC, an amateur club, over Niger Tornadoes is a reward for hard work.
Ngwaogu spoke in Abuja after the 2024 edition of the tournament.
The 2024 Pre-season Tournament concluded with Like-minds Football Club of Gwagwalada defeating Niger Tornadoes of Minna 1-0 in a highly contested match.
He stated that Like-minds FC of Gwagwalada, competing at the third tier, won the trophy purely on the strength of their performance.
The sponsor explained that underestimating a team simply because it is amateur is a grave mistake.
“Like-minds Football Club of Gwagwalada was founded just two years ago, and they are already performing remarkably.
“They previously defeated Nasarawa United Football Club 3-1, demonstrating that they are a team not to be underestimated.
“I heartily congratulate Like-minds FC for emerging as the winners of the 2024 edition of the Unity Pre-season Tournament.
“You are a club to watch with this level of outstanding performance on the field,” he said.
Ngwaogu, who is also the Chairman of the Unity Pre-season Tournament, said that as an amateur club from the NLO, Like-minds FC have proven themselves well.
“Everyone saw their victory as not a fluke but a product of hard work,” he added.
He mentioned that the pre-season tournament was designed to help teams in the northern conference prepare for the new football season, particularly the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The sponsor noted that if the participating teams make good use of their experiences from the tournament, they will be well-prepared for the new season.
Niger Tornadoes, Nasarawa United, and Plateau United from the NPFL participated in the 2024 edition of the tournament, along with teams from lower leagues and academies.
Six players from the junior clubs are set to be signed by NPFL teams.
