Bayer Leverkusen will host Bayern Munich on Saturday in a crucial Bundesliga clash, with the reigning champions needing a flawless performance to stay in the title race. Bayern currently lead the table by eight points, having suffered just one league defeat this season, the same as Leverkusen.
However, Leverkusen’s struggles in converting tight matches into wins have resulted in seven draws, while Bayern have only drawn three. Vincent Kompany's Bayern have been in formidable form, winning seven consecutive league matches, and a positive result on Saturday could all but end Leverkusen’s hopes of defending their title.
Leverkusen, however, can take confidence from their strong record against Bayern under Xabi Alonso. Since taking charge in October 2022, Alonso has led his side to three wins and two draws against the Bavarians. Their most recent victory came in December when they knocked Bayern out of the German Cup in Munich, a match that saw Manuel Neuer receive his first career red card.
Midfielder Granit Xhaka remains optimistic, emphasizing his belief in the team’s ability to beat Bayern, stating that they won’t settle for a draw and will continue to push forward in the title race. Unlike Bayern, who had a taxing midweek Champions League encounter, Leverkusen have had time to rest, which could work in their favor.
Both teams have been bolstered by the form of their key strikers. Harry Kane, back from a hamstring injury, has scored nine goals in his last eight games across all competitions, while Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick has netted 14 times in his past 11 league matches.
Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s attack, assisting nearly half of Schick’s goals this season. In other Bundesliga fixtures, Borussia Dortmund will look to build on their recent Champions League victory when they visit bottom-placed Bochum, while third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt aim to revive their top-four push against Holstein Kiel.
