Leverkusen Eyes European Football History in Europa League Clash Against Roma

Posted : 08 May 2024

Bayer Leverkusen, under the commanding leadership of Xabi Alonso, will march onto their home turf for Thursday's second-leg Europa League semifinal against Roma with an added incentive—to shatter a 59-year-old European football record. A victory or even a draw against Roma not only secures their ticket to the Europa League final in Dublin but also extends their unbeaten streak to 49 games, surpassing the longstanding mark in European football history.

The current record, set by an Eusebio-inspired Benfica side between 1963 and 1965 with a 48-game unbeaten streak, has remained unbroken for nearly six decades. However, Leverkusen now finds themselves on the brink of rewriting history, with the opportunity to leave the previous record in their wake.

Alonso's formidable team has already surpassed Juventus' 43-match unbeaten run from 2011 to 2012, establishing themselves as the best-performing team in the top five European leagues. Following their commanding 2-0 victory in Rome last week, Leverkusen stands on the cusp of progression to the final, even with a narrow defeat, yet the allure of breaking the record adds another layer of motivation to an already illustrious season.

Reflecting on Leverkusen's remarkable journey, goalkeeper and captain Lukas Hradecky expressed the significance of pursuing an unbeaten season, acknowledging the pride he'll carry in sharing this achievement with future generations. Despite Alonso's absence from the sidelines due to suspension, Leverkusen exhibited unwavering dominance in their recent triumph against Eintracht Frankfurt, underscoring their prowess even in the face of adversity.
