The French U20 rugby team, Les Bleuets, achieved a hat-trick of title wins with a stunning performance in the 2023 U20 World Championship.
They outperformed their previous championship-winning teams by scoring 36 tries in the tournament, falling just five short of New Zealand's all-time record.
Head coach Sébastien Calvet faced the challenge of selecting 30 players from a pool of 47 talented individuals.
The squad showcased their versatility and resilience throughout the championship, winning games with clinical attack and disciplined play.
One crucial victory for Les Bleuets was against New Zealand, with the return of second-row Posolo Tuilagi making a significant impact. Despite facing challenging moments, including a 17-0 deficit against England, the team rallied and showed great spirit to win 52-31.
The depth of talent allowed Calvet to rotate players effectively, with strong performances from the likes of captain Lenni Nouchi, Marko Gazzotti, and Oscar Jegou.
The forwards' solid platform upfront, particularly in the rolling maul and set-piece, allowed scrum-half Baptiste Jauneau to excel and set the tempo of the games. Les Bleuets demonstrated their explosive potential in the final, scoring 33 unanswered points after halftime to defeat Ireland 50-14 and claim the championship.
The victory was a significant boost for French rugby, as it continues to thrive across all levels. Gazzotti, named Player of the Tournament, hopes the success of the U20 team will inspire the senior national team to win the upcoming Rugby World Cup in 2023.
