Leon Balogun shares Nigeria’s key to 2026 World Cup qualification

Posted : 19 February 2025

Leon Balogun, the experienced Super Eagles and Rangers defender, has shared his thoughts on what Nigeria must do to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With his years of experience, he believes the team has what it takes to overcome their current struggles and reclaim their place on the world stage.

The 36-year-old, who last featured for Nigeria in June 2022, has earned 46 caps since his debut in 2014. Despite his absence from recent matches, he remains deeply invested in the team’s success and is confident they can turn things around in the qualifiers.

Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign has been challenging, with the team yet to secure a victory. Currently sitting in fifth place in their group, they trail Rwanda and South Africa by four points. As they prepare to resume their qualification journey next month, Balogun expressed optimism in an interview, backing the Super Eagles to rise to the occasion.

He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but emphasized the importance of confidence, urging the players to believe in themselves. According to him, Nigeria has a strong football reputation that must be backed by solid performances. With six games left in the qualifiers, he believes the team has enough opportunities to correct their course and prove their quality.

Balogun also praised the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for appointing a new coach in time for the crucial games ahead. He noted that the coach has been given the resources and freedom to build a strong squad, stressing that the team and fans must support him through the process, even if progress is not immediate.

Reflecting on his journey with the national team, Balogun recalled that the Super Eagles have overcome significant challenges in the past. He remains confident that the current squad, filled with talented players excelling at their respective clubs, has the ability to bounce back and qualify for the World Cup.

Nigeria’s next test will come against Rwanda on March 19, followed by a home clash against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on March 22. Meanwhile, Balogun continues to play an important role for Rangers, contributing a goal and an assist in 19 appearances this season, with his contract set to expire in the summer.
