Leo Messi scores two goals and an assist in Inter Miami's 4-0 victory over Atlanta

Posted : 26 July 2023
Leo Messi continues to make an impact in his new team, Inter Miami, with yet another outstanding performance. After making his first appearance as a substitute and scoring a spectacular free-kick goal in extra time, Messi was given his first start and didn't disappoint.

He shone brightly, contributing two goals and an assist in Inter Miami's impressive 4-0 victory over Atlanta.

This win marked Miami's second League Cup match, and they now hold a perfect record in Group 10 with six wins out of six games.

However, their MLS campaign has been challenging, as they currently sit in last place in the Eastern Conference with only 18 points from 22 games. Their next MLS fixture will be against Charlotte on August 21.

In the eighth minute of the game, Messi opened the scoring by receiving a well-placed long pass, taking the ball forward, and calmly slotting it into the net after his initial shot was saved.

Thirteen minutes later, he turned playmaker, delivering a brilliant pass to Robert Taylor, who finished superbly. Messi then celebrated the goal in honor of David Beckham, who was watching from the stands.

Robert Taylor, who assisted Messi's second goal, added one of his own, making it 3-0 in favor of Inter Miami by halftime. In the second half, Messi continued to impress, providing a pinpoint pass to Taylor for his second goal of the game. With a comfortable lead, Miami cruised to victory.

Manager Tata Martino decided to rest Messi in the 78th minute, allowing him to leave the pitch to a warm reception from the home crowd, and he was replaced by Robbie Robinson. Taylor also made way for a substitute shortly after.

In the 83rd minute, Miami's Christopher McVeigh received a direct red card, leaving his team with ten men. Atlanta had a chance to score from the penalty spot, but Thiago Alameda, Messi's Argentina teammate, missed the opportunity.

It was a memorable outing for Messi and a dominant performance by Inter Miami, showcasing their potential as a team to be reckoned with in the League Cup.
