Leo Messi scores Inter Miami's 94th minute in League Cup

Posted : 22 July 2023
In a historic debut for Leo Messi in the USA, the 36-year-old Argentine superstar came off the bench in the 54th minute and scored a stunning free-kick goal in the 94th minute, securing Inter Miami a thrilling 1-2 home win over Cruz Azul in the League Cup.

The momentous occasion marked a new era in American football. Messi's left-footed strike sent the ball over a wall of defenders and into the top left corner, cementing his place in Inter Miami's short but eventful history.

Sergio Busquets also made his debut for Inter Miami, coming on as a substitute alongside Messi in the 54th minute. The highly anticipated arrival of Messi at Inter Miami had been a long process, taking four years of planning and two years of real pursuit.

Co-owner David Beckham expressed that the efforts were entirely worth it, and the atmosphere at DRV PNK stadium was electric as Messi took to the field, with fans eagerly documenting the historic moment.

Inter Miami took an early lead with a goal from Robert Taylor, fueling excitement in the stadium. Cruz Azul equalized through Carlos Antona in the 65th minute, setting the stage for Messi's heroics in the closing moments of the match.

Before the game, Messi received encouragement from basketball legend LeBron James, among other celebrity spectators like Serena Williams, Tua Tagovailoa, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and Kim Kardashian.

Since Messi's signing, Inter Miami has made significant efforts to build a competitive team around him, bringing in former Barcelona legends Busquets and Jordi Alba, as well as appointing Gerardo "Tata" Martino as their coach. The club's ambition doesn't end there, as they aim to add Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta to their project.

Despite their current position at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, Inter Miami still has a chance to make the playoffs this season.

The MLS will resume operations on August 21, and their next League Cup match will be against Atlanta United, coached by Tata Martino, featuring another world champion, Thiago Alameda.

With Messi's arrival, Inter Miami's journey has entered an exciting new phase with aspirations of success in the American football landscape.
