Leicester's Wilfred Ndidi is 'safe and well' after Nigeria's ordeal

Posted : 17 October 2024

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper has assured that Wilfred Ndidi is recovering well after his recent challenging experience while on international duty with Nigeria. Ndidi was part of the Nigerian squad that encountered significant difficulties during their trip to Libya for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, where they were stranded for over 15 hours at an airport in Al Abraq.

During this ordeal, the Super Eagles faced a lack of food, water, and communication, which led to the cancellation of their match. Cooper emphasized that he maintained regular contact with Ndidi throughout this distressing period, keeping updated on his condition despite some connectivity issues. Fortunately, Ndidi has returned to Leicester safe and sound, ready to rejoin his teammates.

Cooper expressed satisfaction with Ndidi's performance in training since his return. He noted that Ndidi seemed to benefit from the opportunity to train again, suggesting that physical activity might have served as a necessary outlet after the stressful situation. The coach confirmed that Ndidi is mentally and physically fit, assuring that he will be prepared for the upcoming matches.

Leicester is aiming to secure consecutive victories in the Premier League when they face Southampton this Saturday. The team recently achieved its first league win of the season against Bournemouth, which helped elevate them to 15th place in the standings, just above the relegation zone. Cooper is focused on building on this momentum and fostering positivity within the squad.

Cooper acknowledged the team's recent struggles but highlighted the importance of recognizing the progress made in previous matches, regardless of the results. He believes that the hard work put in during the match against Bournemouth has laid a solid foundation for the team moving forward. With this mindset, he is eager for the next challenge against Southampton.

While Cooper awaits the return of several players from international duty, he is relieved to report no new injury concerns within the squad. The coach remains optimistic about his team's depth and potential, as they continue to adjust their lineup to accommodate player absences.

However, the team will still be without Hamza Choudhury, who is recovering from a shoulder dislocation, as well as Patson Daka and Jakub Stolarczyk, who are both nursing injuries. Despite these setbacks, Cooper is confident that the remaining players can rise to the occasion and deliver a strong performance against Southampton.
