Leicester City star Ndidi should replace at West Ham
Posted : 08 June 2023
A few years ago, Wilfred Ndidi, the talented midfielder for the Super Eagles, was widely regarded as one of the best African defensive midfielders and was often compared to Arsenal and Ghana star Thomas Partey.
Partey, who played for Atletico Madrid, was a formidable force in La Liga, consistently challenging the dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid boasted a squad filled with exceptional players, and Partey always excelled under the guidance of coach Diego Simeone.
Meanwhile, Ndidi's performances in the Premier League set him apart, with his impressive stats in interceptions and tackles while effectively shielding the backline.
However, in recent years, Ndidi's fortunes took a downturn due to a serious knee injury he suffered while playing for Leicester City.
This injury significantly impacted both the Foxes' success and the Super Eagles' aspirations for a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
In a twist of fate, Ndidi's midfield rival, Partey, scored the decisive goal at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja during a match in March 2022, denying the three-time African champions a place in the World Cup.
As a result of his injury setback, Ndidi was unable to participate in the World Cup playoffs.
Fast forward to the present, and Ndidi finds himself struggling to regain his previous form, while Partey played a crucial role in Arsenal's qualification for the Champions League, a feat they had not achieved since 2017.
Although Arsenal finished behind Manchester City in the league, they were tantalizingly close to challenging for the title before experiencing a late slump in form.
Following Leicester City's relegation to the Championship, six years after their remarkable Premier League triumph, several key players have been released, and others with notable profiles are expected to depart the club.
It is anticipated that Wilfred Ndidi will be among those leaving the King Power Stadium.
Considering Ndidi's playing style and the Premier League clubs that could benefit from his services, West Ham United appears to be an enticing option.
The Hammers recently secured a historic victory, winning the Europa Conference League by defeating Fiorentina 2-1.
This triumph marked their first major cup title in 48 years.
However, West Ham may face the possibility of losing their captain, Declan Rice, to other suitors such as Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
Rice has attracted the attention of these prestigious clubs ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, and if West Ham receives a substantial offer, they may be forced to part ways with their influential on-field leader.
This is where Wilfred Ndidi comes into the picture. The Nigerian midfielder could potentially fill the void left by Rice at West Ham, despite Rice expressing in a post-match interview that he still has much to offer the club.
West Ham's qualification for the UEFA Europa League in the coming season presents an opportunity for Ndidi to rejuvenate his career and showcase his abilities at a high level once again.
