Maxi Oyedele, a defensive midfielder eligible for the Super Eagles, addressed the media on Wednesday ahead of Legia Warsaw's highly anticipated UEFA Conference League quarterfinal match against Chelsea.
Although he has featured in two official matches for Poland’s senior national team in 2024, Oyedele still qualifies to represent Nigeria due to his U21 status. His dual nationality stems from his Polish mother and Nigerian father, but he was born and brought up in Salford, near Manchester.
Oyedele ended his long-standing association with Manchester United in August 2024 after spending twelve years with the club. He signed a three-year deal with Legia Warsaw, one of the top clubs in Poland, aiming to carve a new path in his professional career.
During his time at Manchester United, Oyedele had the chance to train alongside Jadon Sancho, who is now on loan at Chelsea. Their shared history gives Oyedele a unique perspective on the Chelsea winger's abilities and character.
Sancho, who is represented by a Nigerian agent, joined Chelsea on a loan deal during the summer, with the London club expected to make the move permanent after the 2024–2025 season.
Speaking to Legia Warsaw's official website, Oyedele shared: “I know Jadon Sancho from our training sessions at Manchester United. He’s not only a top-quality footballer but also a really good person. From what I’ve seen, he has the talent to return to the highest level. Right now, though, my full focus is on Legia and giving everything for this crucial match. Our aim is to win.”
With three UEFA Conference League appearances under his belt, including an assist against Molde, Oyedele is relishing the opportunity to face a Premier League opponent. He emphasized the significance of the game: “This is not just a special moment for me personally, but for our entire team and coaching staff. Facing a club like Chelsea is a big deal. I’ve made it clear to the coach that I’m ready and fully prepared for the challenge ahead.”
