Leonard Ngenge, a talented left-footed Nigerian centre-back, has secured a preliminary contract with Leeds United ahead of the 2025-2026 season. The Championship leaders identified Ngenge after scouting him extensively in Nigeria, leading to an invitation for further evaluation in West Yorkshire.
Ngenge, regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the Nigeria Premier Football League, has shown great versatility, excelling both as a centre-back and a left-back. His performances have drawn attention from top clubs, and Leeds United is keen to complete the deal once he reaches the legal age for an international transfer.
Under FIFA regulations, players under 18 cannot be transferred internationally, so the deal with Leeds will be finalized once Ngenge turns 18 later this year. This is a standard procedure for clubs seeking to sign young talent.
Ikorodu City’s Director, Wale Quadri, confirmed that the 17-year-old will begin a new phase of his career with Leeds United in the summer of 2025. Despite his experience in the Nigerian top-flight with Ikorodu City, Ngenge is expected to start with the development squad at Leeds.
Quadri also mentioned in an interview that Ngenge's transfer to Leeds is part of the club’s long-term plans. He highlighted that Ngenge has already visited the club twice for training and is being signed as a future player, with the club waiting for him to turn 18 before finalizing the deal.
In his latest NPFL match, Ngenge played a key role in Ikorodu City’s 1-0 victory over Lobi Stars, providing the assist for the winning goal and earning the official Man of the Match title for his performance.
Ngenge’s move to Leeds follows in the footsteps of other Nigerian players, including Isaac Schmidt and James Debayo, who have represented Leeds United’s first team in official matches during the current season.
