Leeds United targets Nigeria international for summer transfer move

Posted : 01 April 2025

Leeds United have reportedly set their sights on FC Porto’s left-back, Zaidu Sanusi, as they prepare for potential squad reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window. The club is looking to bolster its defensive options, and the Nigerian international has emerged as a key target. This development was reported by Africa Foot (via Sport Witness), highlighting Leeds’ interest in bringing Sanusi to England.

Currently competing for automatic promotion from the Championship, Leeds United are in a strong position alongside Burnley and Sheffield United. With seven league fixtures remaining, their recruitment plans hinge on securing a return to the Premier League. The club’s hierarchy is already considering new additions, and Sanusi has been identified as a viable candidate to strengthen their defense.

Sanusi, 27, has been with FC Porto since 2020 but has struggled for game time this season. Limited to just six appearances across all competitions, including three league matches, he has found himself on the fringes of the squad. His contract with the Portuguese giants runs until June 2027, but a summer move could offer him the opportunity for more regular first-team action.

One possible reason for Leeds’ interest in Sanusi is the uncertainty surrounding Junior Firpo’s future at the club. The Dominican left-back’s contract expires in June, and he has yet to agree to a new deal. If he departs, Leeds would need a replacement, and Sanusi’s experience at both club and international levels makes him an attractive option. The club also has Isaac Schmidt and Sam Byram as alternative choices, but adding another experienced left-back could provide valuable depth.

Sanusi began his football journey with Jega United in Nigeria before moving to Portugal to join Gil Vicente. He did not feature for their senior team and instead gained experience on loan at Mirandela. His performances earned him a permanent move, and he went on to make 74 appearances, scoring three goals for the club.

His career progressed when Santa Clara signed him for a season in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. His impressive displays caught the attention of FC Porto, who secured his services in 2020. Since then, he has made 128 appearances for the club and scored seven goals. However, his reduced playing time this season suggests he might be open to a fresh start elsewhere.

While Leeds remain focused on securing promotion, Sanusi’s potential signing could be a smart move for their long-term plans. If they return to the Premier League, they will require reinforcements to compete at the highest level. Given his defensive capabilities and international experience, Sanusi could be a valuable addition to their squad.
